Olde Mill Inn Wedding - Joe and Justine - Basking Ridge, NJ

The thing I'll remember most about this wedding was the emotions.  Tears during the ceremony, tears during the reception dances.  It's hard to move a photographer that sees the same reception toast jokes every other week and repeated traditions, yet I had to keep wicking away tears from my face so that I could see the moments I was shooting.  Thank you Joe and Justine.

Running Into Love, In Old San Juan

A peculiar thing happened to me a few weeks ago, while I was visiting Old San Juan, Puerto Rico.  Towards the end of my trip, I visited Castillo Felipe del Morro.  While there, my photographer eyes spotted a long white dress and a bouquet nearby and I knew what was going on.  My wedding radar was on point!

I looked around to find a groom, to match the bride I had seen, and sure enough, there was one.  Turns out that these two lovebirds were renewing their vows, after 20 years of marriage.  Wow.

I watched them slow dance to a beautiful song and watched them in motion, but still, on the inside.  I can normally FEEL the anxiety or nerves from many couples on their wedding day, but it was different seeing a wedding couple, 20 years into marriage.  It was odd seeing them go through the motions of my usual couples but at the same time, with a certain confidence and regality.

I, of course, approached them and introduced myself as a wedding photographer from Westchester, NY, who had been admiring their ceremony.  After a few formalities, I pointed to my 5lb DSLR and offered to snap a few photos of them.  Being a Christian couple, they thanked God for adding this small, but welcomed, plot twist into their life and gave me a strong yes.

When I said goodbye, I offered my congratulations on their last 20 years and told them I'd hope to see them there again, in another 20.

We didn't shoot very long, as they were on their way out- but I did create a few other photos from my trip that I was absolutely in love with.  Check them out below.

And finally, for my photo enthusiasts.  The last photo I took while on the back of a trolley at an extremely slow shutter speed.  I stabilized the camera against the rail and slowly panned with the castle in the distance, hoping to keep it in focus, while motion blurring everything else.  Highly recommend a vacation to Old San Juan.    :)

Lukas's Newborn Session in Westchester, NY, by Sage Studios Photography

I want to start by saying how grateful I am, for having received such an overwhelmingly positive response to these images.  I posted a select few to my Facebook page about 3 weeks ago.  The comments ranged from "This photo makes me happy," to "omg this is giving me baby fever."  And for that, I sincerely apologize if any husbands were talked into conceiving once more.  Actually, you're welcome.

Being one of my first newborn shoots, I may or may not have been plagued by nerves.  Fortunately, I have the privilege of keeping the friendship of a wonderful photographer by the name of Amanda Noelle.  For weeks, we prepared, we made trips to Home Goods (where the best props are to be bought), we cut Fabrics from Joanne's, and we spent endless nights watching YouTube videos about how to wrap a baby, how to safely handle a newborn, and tricks&tips for keeping the little ones sleepy and comfortable.  I even learned how to handle being peed on (occupational hazard).

I'd like to think that all of our preparation paid off!  We feared for a while that watching too many videos or seeing too many of other people's work, would have influenced my style too much and resulted in photos that didn't have that certain Sage  to them.  But from the moment we started choosing fabrics and especially once we started seeing the results, Amanda said to me, "this is definitely YOU."

The above photo is one of my favorites from the session because of the organic feel to it.  Coming from wedding photography, I'm inclined to stay away from the blatantly contrived.  But since newborn photography IS portraiture and IS posed by its nature, I tried experimenting with themes instead.  The brown tones and texture of the basket lent themselves to something akin to a Geddes photo (or so I tell myself).  I certainly hope to play with more themes in my future newborn shoots.
